Measurements Matter

As with any home decorating or re-decorating, it is important to get accurate measurements of the room you want to place your rug in. Measurements matter, as does furniture placement, color scheme, and possible activities the room will be used for. A rug that is too big or too small will not help you achieve the look you are aiming for.

Right Rug Size for the Living Room

Oriental rugs in the living room are one of the simplest and most fun pieces of décor you can buy. First, you need to decide whether you want your furniture legs on your rug, off your rug, or resting on the edge of your rug. Once you’ve made this decision, don’t just guess at the measurements. Take a measuring tape and measure the exact dimensions of the rug you need to buy to achieve your desired effect.

We suggest purchasing your rug after you have decided upon a color scheme.  Measurement and furniture placement are key elements to make sure you get the perfect look.

Right Rug Size for the Dining Room

The dining room may be a bit trickier than your average living space because you need to take into consideration the space that your table and chairs take up when you have family and friends at the table and also when you don’t.

It is far more comfortable to make sure the chair legs around the table are either completely on the rug or off. One tip is to try the following: Pull out your chairs as if you are about to sit down. Measure the distance between the chair when it is pulled out, then pulled up to the table. Measure the distance around the table, including the chair legs.

Make sure you get a rug large enough to fit beneath all these measurements along with a “border” around the outside for the most attractive look.

Right Rug Size for the Bedroom

The bedroom measurement is dependent upon two things – the size of your bed, and the size of the room itself. Is the rug going to be a focal piece, or is the rug going to be partially covered by the bed? Most people use narrow, runner-style rugs that are placed at either side of the bed. This is a great option as the rug is fully visible and is also less likely to get damaged by the weight of the bed.

The bedroom in one room in the house where smaller, accent-style rugs may be more appropriate, providing a pop of color and unexpected interest.

No matter what style of Oriental you choose for your bedroom rug, choosing one in the right size is key to achieving a harmonious, balanced look.
