Types of Persian Rugs with Floral Design
Floral design is one of the most popular styles used in Persian rugs. It is especially common in rugs from cities like Tabriz, Sarouk, Kashan, Kerman, Nain, and Isfahan.
This style first began appearing in the 16th century, though the floral motives were available to rug weavers before this time. It is speculated that art and rug weaving designs were suppressed before the 16th century due to invasions from Turkomen and Monguls.
Use of Floral Design in Persian Rugs
When floral design did begin appearing in Persian rugs in the 16th century, weavers looked to popular floral designs of the time such as Shabasi design and started incorporating them into their own creations. They also began using rettes to create central medallions in their rugs.
Curvilinear patterns are also common in floral design Persian rugs as a way to create harmony between the different elements. The size of the flowers used in a floral design rug depends on its overall pattern.
Floral Medallion vs Floral Allover Design
In medallion designs, where there is a central focal point, the flowers are typically smaller because there is less space to work with. When an all–over pattern is used however, larger flowers are more common because there is more space available throughout the entire rug.
Floral design Persian rugs make for beautiful focal points in any room and can be adapted to fit any space. Medallion designs are especially popular as they often represent Lotus flowers which are sacred in Persian culture.
Sah Abbasi Floral Design
The Shah Abbasi floral design, which originated in the region of Isfahan, is one of the more popular designs used in rugs in other regions too including Nain, Tabriz, Kashan, and Mashad.
This design consists of larger palmette-like flowers with slender stems and branches. Several smaller flower motifs are intricately woven in between the larger motifs, filling the entire area of the rug.
Other floral Persian rugs feature only flowers in different styles and sizes with no stems or leaves. These flowers are arranged in various ways to create a wide range of patterns in gorgeous colors.
