Introducing Master Weaver: Motashem
In 19th Century North Central Iran, in a city called Kashan…
Rug weaving started to see a resurgence…
And with it, a legacy…that still lives on to this day.
You see, something special started to happen inside one of the local workshops…
And legend has it…
That it was all because of a man’s devotion to his wife!
But before the story begins…
First, I’ll briefly share why carpet weaving was only just — starting over again.
See, in 1499, a new dynasty rose up in Persia.
And…this new empire…
…was one of the most significant ruling dynasties of Iran of all time.
Safavid Dynasty
In fact, the time of the Safavid dynasty (known as the Safavid Period) marks one of the greatest periods in Persian art, which includes carpet weaving.
Yet, for some strange reason…
… in the city of Kashan, after the fall of the Safavid Empire, (in 1723), carpet weaving slowly faded, and then just…
Disappeared!
Which takes us 100 years on, to the beginning of our story:
The resurgence of carpet weaving in Kashan.
And… a twist in the tale.
See, it wasn’t just a man’s devotion to his wife that sparked the creation of some of the best carpets the world has ever seen…
No, it was a woman’s love for her husband.
His name was Ustad Motashem.
And according to legend, during a troublesome time for the newly married couple, Motashems business was struggling…
So much so, that they were on the verge of bankruptcy…and worse, starvation.
But his wife had a particularly unique skill, because…
She came from the city of Sultanabad — a famous center of rug weaving — and so, to keep the wolf from the door — and enough food on the table — she began to make an exquisite and unique, one-off piece of Persian floor-art.
The first Persian rug to be made in the city of Kashan — for a century.
Which they then sold to the highest bidder.
Soon after, the word spread like wildfire…
And wealthy locals were so impressed with tales of this magical rug…they wanted more. A LOT more.
In fact, there was such high demand that Motashem’s wife immediately began working on her second rug…
Soon she started teaching others how to make them too.
And within the year, Motashem and his wife opened a workshop and began producing as many rugs as their nimble fingers and looms would allow.
The result?
A new era of Persian Rug making in the city of Kashan, and…
Some of the most delicate, intricate, and fine weaves the world has ever set eyes on…
I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I do.
