Silk Runner Rugs

Silk Runner Rugs

Silk is a luxurious fabric that is highly prized for its exceptional shine, softness, and ability to retain color. It is a natural material made by certain insects, like the mulberry silkworm, and is often used to create high-quality products like Persian rugs. While some synthetic fabrics attempt to imitate silk, they cannot match its qualities.

Silk as a strong natural fiber is a good choice for use in rugs. Silk runners are tightly woven and have a high knot count, usually more than 500 KPSI. These runners also have a short pile to protect the fibers and showcase the details and patterns of the rug.

Qum rugs are a unique type of Persian rug that are made entirely of silk, both in the foundation and pile. These rugs are known for their use of ultrafine silk fibers, giving them a luxurious and high-quality feel. While silk is also sometimes used in other types of Persian rugs to add a shimmering effect and highlight certain designs, it is a defining characteristic of Qum rugs.

In some Persian rugs such as Tabriz runner rugs, weavers may use silk to highlight certain designs and add a shimmering effect to certain parts of the rug.

Silk runner lengths can reach up to 3' x 18'.
