Large Silk Rugs

Rugs with a silk foundation have a higher density of knots, typically ranging from 500-1000 KPSI. While these rugs can last for decades, it is best to avoid placing them in high-traffic areas in order to preserve them. Instead, they can be used as wall hangings or placed in formal rooms that are not heavily used.

Qum rugs are a type of Persian rug that are particularly special because they are made entirely of silk – both the foundation and the pile are composed of this luxurious natural material. Qum master weavers are known for using ultrafine silk fibers in their rug-making process. Some weavers created pictorial rugs representing specific landscapes and historical events. These pictorial rugs works best as wall decors. The minimum knot density for these rugs is 600 KPSI.

Isfahan rugs are considered the second most expensive type of Persian rug. These rugs are made with a cotton or silk foundation and feature a silk and wool pile. Isfahan rugs with a cotton foundation typically have a knot density that starts at around 400 KPSI, while those with a silk foundation have a knot density that starts at around 600 KPSI. In general, a higher knot density means allows weavers to create more intricate, curvilinear designs.

In some Persian rugs such as Tabriz rugs, weavers may use silk to highlight certain designs and add a shimmering effect to certain parts of the rug. This technique helps to draw the eye to specific areas of the design and add visual interest to the overall appearance of the rug.

Persian silk rugs come in a range of sizes, including larger options such as 7' x 10', 8' x 10', and 9' x 12'.
