How To Choose An Oriental Rug Size

Whether you are decorating the living room or any other room in your home, there a few rules of thumb that can help with choosing the right size rug.

How and where you place your oriental rug in any room will depend on a combination of several factors, the most important of these being the layout of the room and the size of the furniture. Here’s a snapshot view of different layouts that can help trigger off a few ideas.

Living Room

6 x 9

A 6 x 9 rug is the ideal size if you are looking for a rug that will sit in the center of the living room under the coffee table but do not want it to go under the couches.

8 x 10

A 8 x 10 rug is the size to get if you want to place it in the center of the living room with the coffee table placed in the centre of the rug and the couches placed partially over the rug.

9 x 12

If you would like to have your couches placed fully on the rug with the outer edges of the couches in line with the outer edges of the rug, a 9 x 12 rug is what you will need.

10 x 14

A 10 x 14 rug will allow you to place all your living room couches on the rug while keeping a border of the rug showing through. This arrangement can look magnificent in a large living room if you use an oriental rug that has a rich and intricately designed border running all around.

Bedroom

Your oriental rug placement in the bedroom will be quite different from the placement in the living room.

Runners are the ideal option if you like the idea of having a rug on the bedroom floor but you do not want to have the bed sitting on the rug. You can choose to have just 2 runners on either side of the bed or 3 runners – one on either side of the bed and the third at the foot of the bed.

8 x 10

An 8 x 10 rug will allow you to have the illusion of having runners on three sides of the bed while actually having the bed sitting on the rug.

9 x 12

If you would like the whole bed to sit squarely on the rug, you will need a 9 x 12 rug.

10 x 14

A 10 x 14 will cover up almost the entire bedroom floor space and allow all of your bedroom furniture to be placed comfortably on top of it.

Dining Room

You have to be extra careful when choosing what size of rug you should use in your dining room. This room is quite unlike other rooms where you can choose whether you want the furniture to sit fully on the rug or just partially on the rug and partially off as with your living room couches.

When you are choosing a rug size for the dining room, it is important that you choose a rug that is large enough for all the furniture to sit on it with enough room to spare so when you pull out the dining chairs the hind chair legs are still on the rug.

If the rug is not large enough, when the chair is pulled out the back legs are likely to go off the rug and when you try to pull them back in to sit at the table, they will hit against the edge of the rug. Over a period of time, this continuous rubbing against the edge of the rug is going to damage the rug.

With that in mind, the right size of rug for your dining room is one that will accommodate the entire dining table with room to spare. Of course, it will depend on the size and shape of your dining table.

 8 x 8

An 8 x 8 square rug is the perfect size if you have a standard-sized round dining table with 4 chairs.

8 x 10

If you have a rectangular dining table with 6 chairs, you will need an 8 x 10 rug.

9 x 12

For a larger rectangular dining table with 8 chairs, the rug size should be a minimum of 9 x 12.

If you have a 10-seater dining table, with 4 chairs on either side and 2 at the head, look for nothing smaller than a 10 x 14 rug. The combination of an imposing table such as this size sitting atop a beautiful dining room Persian rug can be absolutely grand and will give your dining room a wonderfully regal atmosphere.

Kitchen

A small 2 x 4 kitchen Persian rug works well to add just a bit of décor and drama to any kitchen floor. A large size rug is not very practical and is not recommended for the kitchen.

Hallway

A long, narrow runner, intricately designed and measuring 2.6 x 10 can create a stunning impact when placed along the hallway.

Foyer

A mid-size Persian rug measuring 4 x 6 will do much to enhance the foyer and create that drama you are looking for without being too overpowering.

Entry Way

If you would like to create an impression as you open the door, you can do this quite simply by placing two small but beautifully designed Persian runners in the entryway. One 4 x 6 rug and the other measuring 2 x 8 would be the perfect combination to complement this space.
