How Much Is Your Oriental Rug Worth?

Much like other treasured pieces of furniture and home décor, you can also get your Oriental rug appraised to determine its monetary value. Unless you, yourself, are an antique appraiser or work in the antique industry, appraisals are best left to the experts. It is ill-advised that you self-appraise.

If you have recently purchased an Oriental rug, be sure to keep the receipt and any necessary insurance information regarding your rug so later, should you need to have your rug appraised, this information will be readily available.

When Do You Need An Oriental Rug Appraisal?

One of the most common reasons why rug-owners get an appraisal done is for insurance reasons. If you are going to purchase insurance for your rug, you will need to get it appraised in order to determine the insurance premium.

Rugs may also need to be appraised if, upon selling them, the seller opts to donate the proceeds to charity.

What Are Some Factors That Determine The Value Of An Oriental Rug Upon Appraisal?

As with all antique appraisals, there are certain factors that determine the value of an Oriental rug. Even if you have recently purchased your rug, it is best to keep these factors in mind so that, when your rug goes to your estate, your relatives will be able to have its value assessed, should they choose to do so.

Quality and Craftsmanship

Many antique rugs have been handed down through generations, and are still in demand today because of high-quality hand-knotting, plant dyes, and other handiwork that wears and lasts beautifully. The better the craftsmanship, the higher the worth of the rug.

Condition

The better condition of the rug, the higher its worth. Taking care of an antique rug is well worth the effort, as any and all repair work can not only be hidden but it will increase the rug’s value as well.

Style

Unfortunately, fashion does come and go, and the same is true for antique and Oriental rugs. The more classic the style, the higher the value of the rug. Classics never go out of style!

Size

In general, larger rugs tend to be worth more. One unique exception to this “rule” is if it is a rug of an unusual size, it may not be as valuable, simply because the size isn’t the norm. This affects smaller rugs more than large ones, but it is a factor that can matter.

Color

Natural dyes are far preferred over synthetics, as they simply “age” better and give the rug a soft and weathered patina that synthetics cannot rival.

Age

An older rug may not be as valuable as you may think if it is made from synthetic materials. Natural rugs are preferred not only for their durability, but also because they age well, and their natural dyes and oils give the rug a gloss, patina, and melding of color that synthetics cannot mimic.

  1. I am an insurance adjuster who is trying to find the value for a 20 year old oriental rug. It appears to have a thick and tight pile as a high quality carpet does. It does not look like it is hand knotted, and it has a backing to it. The owner thinks that it is a Chinese rug and has floral designs around the edge. There is fringe on the ends, but it appears to be bound on the edges. I can send photos if needed. The rug is an eight foot by ten foot rug.

  2. I want to sell my 35″ x 61″ 90 + year old Chinese rug, wool, hand woven What steps are necessary toward this end.
