Types of Persian Rugs Part II

Shopping for an online Persian rug can feel like a very confusing process – after all, there are so many different types of Persian rugs to choose from. However, if you understand the different types of rugs that are available you will have a better sense of what to look for when shopping for a Persian rug or carpet. With that in mind, here is the second in a series of articles on the various types of Persian rugs when shopping through Oriental rug dealers at a store or online.

Joshaghan: These types of hand knotted Persian carpets were very famous during the era of the Qajar dynasty because of their special medallion and rectangular designs.

Isfahan: The carpets of Isfahan mostly bear the Shah Abbas designs consisting of medallions and Shah Abbasi flowers.

Kerman: The carpets of Kerman usually have light colored backgrounds with motifs that include pictures of trees that are sometimes seen in a vase, flowers or leaves. Other high-quality antique Persian rugs woven in Kerman bear pictures of animals. Such rugs are woven in various parts of the Kerman Province such as Rafsanjan.

Shiraz: The rugs known as carpets of Shiraz are woven by Qashqai tribes and other nomadic tribesmen living in tents. These wool rugs are loosely woven and are very smooth with motifs of octagonal medallions at their centers. Dark blue and brown colors along with lighter colors are used in Shiraz carpets.

Hamadan: The antique rugs of this region had their own unique features. For example, the margins of these carpets were made of camel wool. These kinds of Persian rugs are very scarce nowadays. Other small rugs used to be woven in the region were known as Musel.
