There is no such thing as one type of “Persian rug.” There is a rich history that has been created over thousands of years which has led to the development of many different Oriental carpet and rug types. Here is the first in a series highlighting the different types of Persian rugs available in the antique and modern carpet world.

Sarouk: The different types of wool carpet woven in this region were considered as among the most durable rugs in the country. A typical design includes a medallion at the center and an open background bearing a few pictures. Dark blue and red wools are mostly used in this type of Persian rug.

Mahallat: Mahallat or Mahal carpets typically do not have tightly woven knots but instead feature orderly knitting. The motifs used in these rugs generally consist of flowers and leaves made of mostly dark colors with red backgrounds and dark blue margins.

Saraban: The higher quality and older handmade rugs woven in this region are called Mir. The background of the rug is filled with almond or pear-shaped designs with striped margins and pictures of curled hair.

Farahan: People shopping for an antique or fine Persian rug can easily spot the carpets of Farahan – they have short pile and dark blue backgrounds. These carpets have two types of motifs: one is a picture of a large fish which resembles intertwined leaves; the other is pictures of greenhouses with bunches of flowers.

Kashan: Carpets woven in Kashan are among the highest quality hand knotted rugs produced in Iran– the high quality of the work usually sets them apart from traditional wholesale wool rugs. The designs of these Persian carpets are quite visible. The carpets have short pike and typically feature a medallion design at the center and medallions at their four corners. They can be made of silk and wool. Silk is provided from the northern Caspian Regions and the wool used in somePersian carpets is imported from England.
